Healthy doses of self-love

Give Yourself a Healthy Dose of Self-Love This Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day has historically been associated with all things related to romance. While we love roses, hearts, and chocolate (DUH!) we think the holiday has started to shift towards ALL things related to love. Love for others. Love for the planet. Love for spirituality. Love for all that we have been blessed with. Love for ourselves…and by this, we don’t mean narcissism, we mean showing ourselves the love, kindness, and patience we show to everyone and everything around us. In these busy times where we go go go, it is more important than ever that we take a moment to stop, breathe and appreciate who we are, who we’ve become, how we’ve grown, and show ourselves a healthy dose of self-love!

How?! Here are 10 suggestions…

  1. Enjoy watching the sunset with a glass of wine and a good friend (pets totally count!)
  2. Eat the chocolate (goes great with #1 *wink*)
  3. When you’ve truly given back in some way, put your hand on your heart, take a deep breath and feel the amazing energetic vibration of the good deed you’ve just done.
  4. Write in your journal what you love about YOU, whatever that may be. Your kind heart. Your tenacity. Your passion. Your compassion. Your determination.
  5. Take a pause and truly recognize what you’ve accomplished recently – nothing is too small here.
  6. Treat yourself to a massage or facial or BOTH!
  7. Dedicate a meditation session to some healthy self-love, especially if you’re dealing with or have recently dealt with something particularly difficult emotionally or physically. Grab some oracle cards, crystals, or whatever spiritually uplifts your soul and dedicate a moment to YOU.
  8. Eat or drink something super healthy and delish to nourishes your mind, body, and soul — perhaps some golden milk, kombucha, elixir, tea or a heart/belly warming veggie bowl.
  9. Dedicate and calendar out at least one day (or half day) out of each month dedicated to some self-love and healthy reflection.
  10. Buy YOURSELF some beautiful fresh flowers – bask in their aroma and place them somewhere to remind you that you are truly amazing and deserving of the love and light that surrounds you.

Woman holding a silver holiday ball

‘Tis the Season for Giving Positive Vibes!

Today we’re focusing on the concept of giving the gift of positive vibes.

While the holidays are a happy time for some, for others it can be melancholy. On either end of the spectrum, it is indeed a season where emotions are heightened. Our emotional state can greatly affect our health both mentally and physically. So it’s important to keep those good vibes at the forefront of our holidays and remember that it’s more of a feeling than pretty lights, gifts, and fancy dinners. Sure, all of those fun things are part of the season, and we’re not saying to not enjoy them — by all means please do! But it’s important to remind ourselves of what it truly means to “give” and allow ourselves to really feel the positive vibrations that surround us when we do so with kindness, compassion, and authenticity.

Giving doesn’t always mean we have to give a tangible gift. Not everyone has the means to give a wrapped gift and this isn’t something anyone should feel bad about. There’s a deeper meaning to the word “give” that we’d like to touch base on here, and that is to give authentically from your heart in whatever beautiful vibration you can. Giving from the heart can be simple; a smile to someone who might be having a tough day — like that person behind the register who’s inevitably having to endure the last minute gift buying rush. It can also be giving your time to someone who is need of help, or perhaps to that one friend who’s had a particularly tough year and needs someone to lean on over a glass of wine and good conversation.

So when you think about the word “give” try to not only think of it as a something to be unwrapped but as a gift of positive energy from your heart that will make an impact, whether big or small.

Many people have lost a great deal this year due to natural disasters, for example. The most important thing these people have now is each other and the kindness of those around them…people who care and are willing to give by donation or their time to help them thru this challenging moment.

However, you plan to give this holiday, give with your whole heart. Give with a sense of humility and gratitude. Give with kindness, grace, and compassion. Give without the expectation of receiving and let the gift of positivity surround you!

From the staff at Sage Health, we want to wish you ALL a merry, happy, and healthy holiday.

The Importance and Practice of Expressing Gratitude

November is indeed a month where we take a good look at all of the things we’re grateful for. Expressing gratitude is something we encourage practicing year round, and even daily, to maintain a sense of humility and balance, which can be a huge boost to support our mental and spiritual health. There are so many ways we can do this, from vocal expression to written word, and even in our meditation practice. But the key is to really FEEL gratitude when we’re expressing it! And making this a ritual doesn’t have to be a daunting or overbearing task, you can simply think it or say it with the littlest things such as when someone holds the door open for you or when you and your family arrive home safely after a trip. At the end of the day, the little things we are grateful for are just as important as the bigger stuff, if not more so.

While we’re on the topic, it’s extra important to remember to carry that sense of gratitude over into the holiday season, especially during all the hustle and bustle that inevitably surrounds us during this time of year.

Here’s a little idea…set an intention to carry this sense of grace and gratitude with you throughout the season in an effort to stay mindful of all the little things that mean so much. Every day make an effort to list at least 3 things you’re grateful for to help you stay grounded and truly feel the magic of the holiday spirit!

We have so much to be thankful for here at Sage Health so we thought it’d be fun to compile a list of 10 things we’re grateful for and share it with you…

  1. Our absolutely amazing clients and patients, we wouldn’t be here without you!
  1. Our staff, we couldn’t function without our incredibly talented and dedicated team.
  1. The art of massage…from an amazing therapist — ahhhhhhh!
  1. The ancient healing practice and wisdom of acupuncture
  1. Chiropractic care – to realign and help us hold it all together!
  1. Organic skin care and the special touch of an aesthetician
  1. Holistic medicine – herbs, tonics, essential oils, and ALL of the things!
  1. Chocolate!
  1. Having our wellness center in the beautiful beach town of Encinitas
  1. And last but definitely not least, we are so grateful for our loved one’s — family, friends and, yes, even our beloved pets!

Skin-Care-Acupuncture-Fall-Sage-Health

Skin Care and Acupuncture Tips for Fall

Fall is officially here so it’s a good time to think about adjusting some of your wellness routines to accommodate the changing weather patterns. There are two areas we’d like to highlight where these changes can be made, with acupuncture and skin care, as believe it or not, they both go hand-in-hand in terms of their complementary benefits to one another.

We’ll start with what you should think about for your skin care then segway into how acupuncture comes into play, and why.

What should we switch up in our skin care regimen for Fall?

As the summer season fades it can often leave your skin feeling dull/dry, clogged and hyperpigmented. We’re feeling this shift here in Southern California with the recent Santa Ana winds that bring extremely hot and dry desert weather patterns. For this time of year our resident skincare specialist, Julie Colozza, recommends several things to help keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

Lower the SPF on your Daytime Moisturizer

The dryer weather still calls for a healthy level of moisturization but as our part of the world draws further away from the sun (during this time of year), and our sun exposure becomes more limited, it’s not necessary to maintain the same level of a barrier against the sun’s UV rays. Depending on what SPF strength you readily use in the summer months, think of backing down a few notches to a protection level of 15 to 30.

The Solar Day Cream from The Body Deli would be a great choice to protect your skin during the fall and winter months. “This unique moisturizer is formulated with 15% NON-NANO MICRONIZED ZINC a natural mineral sunscreen. Full spectrum antioxidants such as VITAMIN C, COQ10, TOCOTRIENOLS and PUMPKIN SEED OIL work to protect against free radical damage.” – The Body Deli

Level Up on Your Nighttime Moisture

Even though we’re still experiencing warmer temperatures here in SoCal at the onset of fall, the nights are cooling down and as mentioned above, the humidity levels are dropping — making the air quality much dryer, which can wreak havoc on your skin. Julie recommends switching up your night moisturizer from a light summer moisturizer, to a medium/thick lotion or cream such as the Nourish Night Cream from The Body Deli. This will provide your skin with a healthy moisture barrier and means of support needed to combat the changing seasons.

Think About Switching Up Your Cleanser

In the summer months, your skin may require a cleanser that really helps to remove excess dirt and debris as a result of the high heat and humidity. But in fall and winter, your skin could require a gentler cleanse to prevent it from becoming too dry. Julie says, “if your cleanser becomes too drying, switch to a cream based or foam cleanser such as the ‘Almond Milk Cleanser’ from The Body Deli.”

For Those Stubborn Dark Spots

Here in Encinitas, and San Diego for that matter, we love to play in the sun…especially in the summer! But the reality is that whether you’re a sun worshipper or not, our skin is prone to the exhibiting dark spots — the closer we are to the sun the more likely we are showcasing them as our skin matures. Increased sun protection and lessening your exposure is key. If you are susceptible to dark spots and have noticed an accumulation of them, Julie recommends a pigment lightening treatment. She also recommends scheduling deeper chemical peels and exfoliations. Taking advantage of these and other regular facial treatments can help to inspire and motivate you to care for your skin on a deeper level.

So How Does Acupuncture Fit in with our Skin Care Regime?

Pairing acupuncture with holistic organic facials can nourish your body and help counter the dryness of fall. Acupuncture can help keep your skin youthful and luscious and improve your health. Here’s how:

The principle of the five phases of nature is integral to traditional Chinese Medicine theory. The five element phases are fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. Each element has an associated season, emotion, color, and organ which is intertwined with health. Autumn is represented by metal and associated with both the lung and large intestine organs. There are twelve meridians which are pathways of energy that flow through our bodies with a life force called qi. When these meridians are balanced it is difficult to succumb to illness. The qi of the lung and large intestine meridians is most active in the fall season. The lung meridian circulates qi to the lung as well as the skin. The disharmony of the metal element in our body is dryness.

If you are feeling the effects of dry skin or noticing more dry coughing or lung symptoms try a consult with one of our practitioners.

Looking to boost your skincare routine? Book an appointment with Julie for a facial and let her help you find the right products for your skin to look and feel its best!

Just Let That Shit Go: Some Stress Relieving Advice

There are three causes of misalignment in chiropractic care:

  1. Trauma
  2. Toxins
  3. Thoughts

Isn’t it amazing that something as simple and seemingly benign as thoughts can have a huge impact on our health?

We can truly defeat ourselves by negative thinking. A hurtful past criticism can take hold and shape our self-views. This can impact our decisions, communications, and alter the outcome of events in our life’s journey.

So, NO stinkin’ thinkin’… Here are a few life lessons I’ve learned and want to share with you so that you too can be the best version of yourself.

Sticks and Stones

Often, when someone says something hurtful or seriously inappropriate to you, those words are about them, not you. One of the most damaging weapons is the human tongue.  When we internalize hurtful words we can allow them to negatively affect our physiology. Fortunately, the best defense against these weapons is alive and well in all of us.

Here’s an example of how words can affect health at meal time. For good health and nutrition, you need to be in parasympathetic nervous system mode which equals proper rest and digest. If you are having a heated discussion during mealtime your stress may cause a stomach ache because a lot of the blood has left your stomach and gone to your muscles to prepare your body to fight. If that stress persists for weeks, month, or years eventually you may end up with a full blown digestive disease like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) Hint hint… arguing during a meal disrupts digestion. Don’t let this ripple into a health issue…only eat when you are relaxed.

Stress Management

OHM my Goddess — stress is okay to experience for a short amount of time, but damaging to your health for a prolonged amount of time. Why? Because it depletes your immune system. Your immune system is a super power constantly warding off viruses, bacteria, and even cancer cells. When you feel overwhelmed ask yourself, “is there something that I need to do right now that will make a positive change in my life and help release these negative stressors?” If the answer is yes… this is exactly what your stress helped to accomplish. Alternately, if you can’t sleep at night and are overwhelmed with worry and are not being proactive finding solutions to your problems stress is hurting your health and you need to seek additional help in finding solutions.

Here’s the take home… – the defense against harmful words and stress is YOU!

You have the control over how you react to a stressful situation. You choose (whether you are aware of it or not) your response, isn’t that wonderful? Let go of what does not serve you, and be grateful for all the wonder and gifts you have. You have a responsibility to make our world a better place by shining your light and sharing all the love.

So if things are just not working out remember this, and go grab a dandelion (it’s okay if it is imaginary, get in a nice cross sit yoga pose, and blow that dandy in the wind and say, “just let that shit go.”

And, know that you control your reaction to stress and continue to shine your brilliant light!

Tips for Finding a Healthy Work-Life Balance

I recently experienced a joyful moment in my life where I was able to be fully present with my family while on vacation. This moment inspired the topic of this post and I would like to share some ways in which I’m able to find a healthy work-life balance as a mother of two young girls, a wife, the owner of a busy health and wellness practice, and a student!

Release the Need to Be PERFECT

I happily admit that I am NOT a perfectionist! With everything going on in my world, sometimes things simply aren’t going to get done or aren’t going to be perfect — and at the end of the day, that is a-ok in my book. The world isn’t going to end if I can’t do the laundry right away, the dishes need to get done or I’m running a little behind on something. I maintain a calm and relaxed mind in times like this when I have to just say, “oh well!” As such I am able to keep my stress levels under control and focus things that truly matter…and enjoy them!

Stay Active

If you know me, you that I’m an avid runner. This is another part of the balancing act that is vital to my overall health and well-being. Maintaining some form of consistent physical activity creates synergy between mind and body. It’s so much more than just staying in shape, which is an added bonus but that’s just one benefit of many. There are countless videos circulating the internet showcasing physically active women and men in their 80’s and 90’s. Their motto is often the same, “Don’t stop moving!” Finding the time for physical activity can be challenging if you’re juggling a lot in your work and personal life, I know. But aim to find something that motivates you and start with a small commitment. Maybe it’s once a week or twice a month, then work up from there. And whether it’s yoga, surfing, cross-fit, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply going for a walk with a friend, remember, it’s all about progress and NOT perfection.

Never Stop Learning and Growing

I LOVE to learn! Continued education is important to me and I am currently chipping away at a degree in acupuncture. Staying current, learning new things, and gaining new perspectives helps me to stay relevant in my industry. It also helps me to stay humble and grounded. Staying open to a constant state of learning is a workout for our minds to help keep us healthy and balanced. Find ways to continue learning that makes sense for you. If you’re too busy to attend courses, maybe read an insightful book or listen to an audio version. Another great learning tool is podcasts. Find one that resonates with a need in your life, and listen while commuting or even folding laundry.

Deal with Pressing Issues Right Away

We tend to put pressing issues off but this isn’t something I like to do…or recommend. I refer to this as dealing with the “yucky stuff.” Often times a pressing issue is something that really needs to be dealt with immediately and can present a learning opportunity. While it’s ok to take a step back and assess the situation before reacting emotionally or hastily, don’t put it off for too long. Rip the band-aid off and address it so you can move on.

Delegate Delegate Delegate

I can’t stress this one enough! I’m honestly “ok” if we’re a little overstaffed in my practice to make sure that my own needs and the needs of my clients and the overall practice are met. The benefits outweigh the cost and in the end, everyone is less stressed and able to maintain a sense of controlled balance. This also applies to my home life. For example, I’m ok with budgeting to have someone come in and professionally clean my home. Time with my family is extremely valuable and delegating this task out allows me to focus on making that happen on a regular basis.

Treat Yourself!

And last but not least, finding a healthful balance is all about allowing yourself to enjoy the little things in life. I am a huge proponent of treating yourself! While I love my life and am extremely grateful for all that I have, I work extremely hard so I don’t sweat it when the moment strikes to indulge a little in something I might not otherwise allow myself to on a regular basis — like eating dessert, buying the shoes, enjoying another glass of wine or taking that much-needed vacation! It’s always good to keep these things in check to avoid overindulging…but it’s ok to allow yourself a little frivolity once in a while.

Juggling life and finding a healthy balance is a struggle we’re all too familiar with these days. We live in a digital age, which adds a constant stream of communication and stimulation only feeding our desire to take care of everything on our to-do list, yesterday, while a countless array of newly important (and not so important) things continuously get added to the list. On the one hand, this new digital age life offers a sense of security when it comes to staying in close touch with friends and loved ones…for a variety of reasons. It’s important to be grateful for the positives that it offers. But with these constant information highways, comes the need for balancing life, which is entirely possible if we just pause, breathe, and prioritize.

How do you maintain a healthy balance in your life? I’d love to hear your tips and tricks in the comments of this blog on our Facebook page.

Celebrating Transition from Facing Adversity

The title of this blog couldn’t be more apropos given recent events at Sage Health as we are absolutely celebrating a huge transition from facing some very recent adversity.

Here’s what happened…

We were happy to celebrate the recent rainy weather given the serious California drought conditions, we just didn’t think that meant it would literally rain in our office!

In early March, a pipe burst in the suite above us and the Sage Health office became a disastrous flood zone. Stress doesn’t even begin to describe how we felt. How on earth were we going function as a business?! Our staff needed to work, and our clients needed treatments! Our heads were spinning but we banded together, rolled up our sleeves and faced the adversity head-on — focusing on how we could turn this negative into a positive.

And we did just that!

Immediately, we found a way to maintain business as usual, as best we could, in what was left of the usable space in our current office. We were also lucky enough to temporarily rent the empty space next door to continue offering massage, acupuncture and skin care services. We were beyond grateful that we were able to make it work while we got down to planning how we would renovate the damaged space.

Here’s where the fun part comes into all the madness. In the renovation planning process, we had this “Aha!” moment that our space really needed some adjustments to accommodate our services that required a quieter environment, such as, massage, acupuncture, skin care, etc. As our current clients will recall, all of these services were previously given in the front rooms near the reception and patient waiting area, which in hindsight wasn’t ideal — though we made it work.

So we decided that the front rooms near the reception and waiting area would be used for chiropractic treatments; while the back office space would be transformed into a tranquil spa-like setting where it’s much quieter (and serene!) to more effectively accommodate our services that require this type of setting such as  massage, acupuncture, skincare, and other bodywork treatments.

It’s funny how things work out sometimes. While we certainly wouldn’t have wished for the flood to have happened, it did drive us to improve how our space functions for our clients and staff. We were forced to deal with a disastrous moment of adversity that led us to transition into something that our business truly needed…yet who knows when or if we would’ve ever come to that realization without it!

Lesson learned and we are truly grateful.

We also want to thank YOU our wonderful patients who bore with us and supported us during the transition. We wouldn’t be here without you!

So for the month of May, we’re offering $10 OFF ANY SERVICE! Chiropractic, Chirosage, Fire Cupping, Acupuncture, Massage, Skin Care, etc. This offer isn’t applicable towards insurance co-pays or deductibles but if you’re on our wellness program or a cash patient, you are able to take advantage of this offer.

Thank you again and if you haven’t come in to see our newly renovated space, please come see us!

Massage is often touted as a luxury or a means of pampering one’s self in a spa setting. While massage can definitely feel like a treat, it’s actually extremely therapeutic and, in our humble opinion, necessary to maintaining one’s overall health and wellness. Our bodies could easily be likened to the cars we drive. Sure we feed them fuel and wash them regularly, but the reality is they’re most likely to run optimally if we take them in for routine maintenance. Chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage are ways in which we “tune up” our bodies and maintain them so we can feel and perform at our best. The more regularly we schedule these treatments into our world, the better our bodies will feel and function.

That leads us right into an introduction to our awesome massage therapy team at Sage Health. All of our therapists are selectively screened for their abilities, style, and professionalism to ensure they can offer the best experience possible for our clients. They all have a slightly different style and we’d like to introduce you to them here…

Sara Valdez of Sage Health

Sara Valdez as many of our patients now know is a common friendly face in the Sage Health office. In addition to offering massage therapy, she also helps Dr. Sage with a lot of additional services within the office where our patients are concerned. Sara has a very relaxed approach to her massage style and is happy to adjust to the needs of a client. She communicates well with her clients and remains mindful of massage pressure. It’s important to her that her clients feel they can communicate with her in order to give them the best experience possible.

rebecca-deroest

Rebecca Deroest has a massage style is that versatile and extremely intuitive. She can range from deep tissue with long healing strokes, to a gentler touch if need be. She reads the body through her touch quite well and adjusts accordingly. When asked which areas she likes to focus on for overall health and wellness, she mentioned that neck and shoulders as well as low back and glutes, which are commonly an area of concern that she likes to give a little extra attention to. We can certainly attest to her abilities to release these areas of the body while still offering a relaxing and healing experience.

sunset-ocean-turquoise-sky

Patrick Fischer has been a therapist with Sage Health for a long while, and for good reason. He’s built up an extremely loyal following of clients who swear by his healing abilities. We can tell you first hand that he’s a master of deep tissue massage. As he cares deeply about educating his clients on the reason behind focusing on a particularly tight area of the body, he’s happy to explain exactly what’s going on in your body and offer a truly effective massage to help release any extreme tension.

Lorien-Massage-Therapist-Sage-Health
Lorien Lehmer practices a blend of eastern and western massage techniques
including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Acupressure, Ayurvedic, Polarity, Reiki,
Raindrop Therapy, Reflexology, Lymph Drainage, Energy Medicine,
Craniosacral Therapy and Pregnancy to customize your session for maximum
stress as well as injury relief and deep relaxation of the nervous system.
Working with the body for over 17 years her work is intuitive and
supports an integration of body, mind, and emotion.

We adore our massage team here at Sage Health and encourage our clients to experience them all to feel the difference in what they offer. They are truly fantastic healers and masters of their craft!

The ZYTO Scan: Overview and Benefits for Health and Wellness

At Sage Health we offer a full spectrum of integrative health offerings from chiropractic to acupuncture, massage, organic facials, nutritional counseling and much more. One thing we’ve added to our list of services in the ZYTO Scan.

ZYTO Scanning has been gaining momentum in the holistic health realm and it’s easy to see why. The amount of information you and your practitioner can gain from a single reading is profound.

zyto scan informational graphic

So what is the ZYTO Scan and how does it work?

The ZYTO Scan is conducted utilizing a technology that measures skin fluctuations in the skin, which is referred to as the galvanic skin response, or GSR. Lie detector testing is a form of GSR. When the scan is conducted the ZYTO technology utilizes information that is relayed via an array of biocommunication principles and concepts that offer some deeply insightful information in regards to one’s health and wellness. Many practitioners will use it to gain a variety of information including detecting food sensitivities, determining environmental and mental stressors, and even offering beneficial aromatherapy treatments.

Will the ZYTO Scan procedure hurt? How long will it take?

Not at all. The process is simple, painless and can be performed in as little as 3 minutes. The duration of the scan varies, it all depends on the information your practitioner is looking to receive.

Your hand will be placed on the ZYTO hand cradle while the scan is performed. In a subtle manner, small energetic pulses will be introduced to your body while the scan is being conducted. The body responds naturally during the process and the ZYTO software records how your body responds. Some people report feeling a slight tingling or zing from the energetic communication but the sensation is never uncomfortable. Most people don’t feel a thing.

What happens after the ZYTO Scan is performed?

Your practitioner will review your results with you and offer a course of treatment to help you on your path to overall health and wellness.

Book your ZYTO Scan appointment with Dr. Kirsten Sage today using our online booking system or by giving us a call.

What is Cold Laser and How does it Work to Relieve Pain?

If you’re a patient at Sage Health, you already know that we aim of offer a variety of treatments to help with optimum healing and sustained wellness. From chiropractic to massage, acupuncture, fire cupping, nutritional counseling, and even organic facial treatments, we truly have something for everyone to help them feel their best. Adding to our list of beneficial offerings is the healing treatment of Cold Laser Therapy.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold Laser Therapy is a special modality that Dr. Sage likes to incorporate into her treatments to further promote the overall healing process. This therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with compromised soft tissue, which is believed to increase circulation and further enhance the body’s ability to heal. Cold Laser Therapy is commonly used for acute and chronic conditions in an effort to help decrease pain, reduce inflammation, and alleviate spasms.

How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

The cold laser is administered via a small handheld device that emits a focused concentration of light. The laser device is held directly over the affected area for a short period of time, anywhere from seconds to minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the power of the laser.

The light therapy goes through the skin and the theory is that it activates small molecules in our cells called chromophores. These little chromophores create energy similar to the way photosynthesis works in plants. To further illustrate this point, plants grow when they receive energy from the sun during photosynthesis, light then activates chloroplasts to make glucose molecules causing plants to grow. In a similar fashion, molecules in our bodies activated by laser therapy stimulate healing of damaged tissues and are theorized to activate acupoints along the meridians (energy pathways) within the body.

Dr. Sage is a devout study of the ancient healing arts of acupuncture. She regularly incorporates her knowledge of the meridian pathways into her gentle, and uniquely specific chiropractic treatments in an effort to help her patients receive even greater overall benefits in the healing process.

Why is it Called Cold Laser Therapy?

Simply because the laser does not heat-up nor can it cause any damage your soft tissues. It does not in actuality feel uncomfortably cold on the skin.
